MEANWHILE, AT WINKSTEAD HALL, CHIGLEY...

Chigley and beyond

Beyond Camberwick Green, and north from the great road lies Winkstead Hall; and the estate and farms of Chigley.  This Elizabethan estate is the home of Lord Belborough – the county magnate and designated Royalist commander.  Lord Belborough has raised a cavalry regiment – the Belborough Lobsters and a Regiment of Foot – the Chigley White-coats.  Both are commanded by His Lordship, and he is always accompanied by Mr Brackett, his Page and ‘Fr’ Bilton, his rheumatic Laudian Chaplain - who is also the tutor, and a garden designer in the Italianate style.  His Lordship has employed certain ‘Foreign’ officers who have served in the continental wars.  Reputed to be Gubbins and Sneed.

Lord Belborough's Lobsters - his Lordship and 'Fr' Bilton to the front

Winkstead Hall is being fortified with earth works, by Clutterbuck, the Dutch engineer.  It is in a state of readiness for war.  Clutterbuck is a water engineer and is also something of a soldier of fortune.  He quietly whistles ‘Merck toch hoe Sterck’ while pacing out the earthen walls.  He would no doubt be more comfortable in the more Calvinist  minded Trumpton, but business is business… ‘plans to be followed and measurements made.’  He is assisted by Horace and Cyril.

Beyond Chigley

Treddles Wharf

To the east of Trumpton lies Treddles Wharf.  Mr Swallow looks after the wharf.  Master Dagenham, the merchant from the far away Hanseatic town of King’s Lynn trades here and is a known Parliamentarian - and possible spy?

 Windy Hill

Bestride the great East road is Windy Mill, and the windmill of Windy Miller.  This mystical pacifist and prophet has drawn numerous sectarians to his cause and they have declared themselves to be ‘Clubmen’ who will resist all armed parties in Trumptonshire - and will be neutral in any fighting.  It is imagined they will continue to trade however with all parties?

Lord Belborough, Gubbins, Sneed and Cornet Brackett

Lord Belborough has received reports that a party from Trumpton are heading to Camberwick Green to forage and make a reconnaissance in force- and possibly seize the county Arsenal at Pippin Fortress.

The Trumpton Trayned Band is believed to be en-route – with the Trumpton Horse.  They may possibly have a small cannon...

  1. Thanks. They are a combination of ATCA and ATS, mostly conversions. The small command group has also been used in Williamite games; and the figure of Lord Belborough is an ATS special of Marshal Schomberg in full armour. Some of the horses are Italeri.

  2. The hessian works very well indeed as a playing surface and combines so nicely with the fabric roads. Interesting background information once more. I await the coming action with great enthusiasm.

  3. What size of units are you using ? Do you think the rules would work for the Glorious Revolution?

  4. The rules started life in the Williamite period - and they have been tweaked for ECW. The unit size is:
    Foot 12 - 18 ish
    Horse 8 - 12 ish

And some independent company strength units - especially for the siege games. I reduced the pike/shot ratio in the later period.

First battle report coming later, and many thanks
